Thought experiment – Deploy Windows client

In these thought experiments, demonstrate your skills and knowledge of the topics covered in this chapter. You can find the answers to these thought experiments in the next section.

Scenario 1

Contoso has 2,000 workstations currently running Windows 8.1 Pro. The company plans to perform an in-place upgrade to Windows 11 Enterprise. Most of the users work at the head office, though about 50 staff members work remotely. Your staff already uses Office 365 Pro Plus, and you are considering purchasing a Microsoft 365 Enterprise subscription.

As a consultant for Contoso, answer the following questions:

  1. Is an in-place upgrade a suitable method of deploying Windows 11?
  2. Your manager is concerned that moving to the cloud will be problematic and involve additional purchase costs and workload to configure Azure Active Directory for your users. How should you advise your manager?
  3. Management has been given the green light to proceed with the rollout of Microsoft 365 Enterprise to all Contoso staff. You want to ensure staff can still use their application settings following the rollout of Microsoft 365. What single resource can you use to migrate user and application settings?
  4. The devices within your research and development lab require access to a secure wireless network, which will be implemented simultaneously with the upgrade rollout. You must deploy the network WiFi settings to the R&D team devices with minimal effort. How will you deploy the settings?

Scenario 2

Contoso has 50 remote workers spread across the county. The remote workers will receive new Surface devices to replace their old laptops. You decide the vendor will ship the devices directly to the users rather than have them pick them up during their next visit to the head office. You have planned to deploy the devices using Windows Autopilot.

Answer the following questions for your manager:

  1. How will the devices be recognized as belonging to Contoso if the IT department has not first configured them?
  2. How will the remote users know to trust the device and that it belongs to Contoso if it is shipped direct from the vendor?
  3. How will the user know that the device configuration is progressing, and can the user bypass the device configuration?
  4. How will the device be secured per Contoso corporate security and compliance policies?

Scenario 3

Your organization is expanding and runs a mixture of operating systems on its devices, including Windows 7 and Windows 10 Pro. The company wants all the devices running on a single common operating system, Windows 11 Pro.

Answer the following questions for your manager:

  1. Some devices were purchased with Windows 11 in S mode. How can the company upgrade Windows 11 in S mode devices to Windows 11 Pro?
  2. Your manager asks if the Windows 7 devices can be upgraded directly to Windows 11 Pro or whether they should be replaced.
  3. You want to reduce the impact on users during the rollout of Windows 11 Pro. What deployment approach would you recommend that retains all user and application settings wherever possible and involves the least amount of downtime for users?

Scenario 4

Adatum Corporation has deployed Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Intune. Many of your users work in small branch offices—some work from home with work laptops. It is important for you to be able to manage these users’ computers remotely. As a consultant for Adatum, answer the following questions about remote management in the Adatum organization:

  1. One of your users phones the help desk, requiring assistance with an application. They need to know how to perform a grammar check with Microsoft Word. They are not very experienced, and despite your best efforts and explanation of how the process works, they are still confused. What remote management tool might you consider using in this situation?
  2. Another user calls the help desk. They’ve lost a file and need you to locate and restore it to their desktop. They’re due to leave the office for a conference this afternoon, and they tell you that’s the best time for you to resolve the issue. What remote management tool would you use?
  3. You try to connect to this user’s computer later that afternoon, but despite knowing that the necessary Windows Firewall settings are configured, you cannot connect. Why?
  4. You want to use Windows PowerShell remoting. You try to connect to a remote machine but are unsuccessful. What steps must you perform on the remote machine before Windows PowerShell remoting can work?
